When most people think about food in Mexico, they undoubtedly picture tacos and tequila. And they aren’t wrong to do so. Both are a staple down here! What many people might not know about Mexico, and Mexico City in particular, is that there is a huge array of vegan options available too. In fact, Mexico City is such a foodie hotspot, that you can find nearly anything you desire.
I moved to Mexico City as a vegetarian/pescatarian, not having touched meat in 20 years. When an Uber driver asked if I loved el pastor (meat), I admitted that I hadn’t tried it yet, and never would, because I didn’t eat meat. After shock and then silence, I’m pretty sure he gave me a one star review. I knew I’d fare OK in the city, but I was a bit bummed thinking I’d have to skip out on so many delicious street food options.
Much to my surprise and delight, I discovered an entire subculture of vegan food. From taco stands to sit-down restaurants, Mexico City is a vegan foodie’s paradise, if you know where to go.
After nearly a year of eating my way through the city, I’ve compiled my top recommendations from one of the most popular neighborhoods for tourists and locals alike, Roma Norte. Here’s a list of my favorite spots to grab vegan food in Mexico City’s hipster neighborhood.
Guanajuato 54, Roma Nte., 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX
One of my first vegan finds, I still frequent Forever Vegano weekly. There’s enough seating to plug in your laptop and work over both breakfast and lunch. The menu ranges from healthy options, like the fruit plate with coconut yogurt and house made granola, to delightfully filling chilaquiles and loaded veggie burgers with tempeh bacon. With an assortment of kombuchas, juices, smoothies, and beer, you won’t go thirsty here either.
LA PITAHAYA VEGANA
Calle Querétaro 90, Roma Nte., 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX
This quaint spot is warm and welcoming, and the food is as tasty as it is colorful. The menu at La Pitahaya focuses strictly on delicious Mexican food with a twist — pink tortillas! Try the enfrijoladas, and be prepared to share the generous portions with a friend.
street cart located on Orizaba, one block south of Plaza Rio de Janeiro, Roma Nte., 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX
What could be better than a street food cart that serves veggie burgers, hot dogs, and pizza rolls? Not much. The crew that runs this cart is extremely personable and there is often a wait to get a seat on one of the six barstools. The menu of the day is affordable at 65 pesos (just over $3) and includes the agua del dia, a sandwich of your choice, and french fries.
POR SIEMPRE VEGANA TAQUERIA
street cart located on Manzanillo, in between Calle de Chiapas and Tapachula, Roma Nte., 06760 Cuauhtémoc, CDMX
My personal favorite, this extremely popular taco cart is home to the longest list of vegan tacos I’ve found. From el pastor to bistec, a non-meat eater can finally experience what the locals eat on a daily basis! There’s no seating available, so patrons stand on the sidewalk, strategically eating their tacos one-handed. It’s an art that I haven’t quite mastered but love to watch. Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria also boasts an impressive condiment bar with toppings such as nopales (cactus), potatoes, beans, and at least four different salsas. Definitely don’t let your tacos go naked here! (Beware, the green salsas are extra picante.)
Manzanillo 22-B, located next door to Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria, Roma Nte., 06700 Cuauhtémoc, CDMX
I accidentally stumbled upon this hole in the wall while waiting for the neighboring taqueria to open. Much to my surprise, Vegani has something on their menu that no other restaurant on this list specializes in: delicious vegan pizza. Rethink traditional pizza and try a combination you’ve never had before, like the Mexicana topped with bistec, chorizo, and jalapeños.
I may not be vegan, but you’ll find me frequenting at least one of these vegan restaurants every single week. The vegan food in Mexico City is that good!
The next time you’re in CDMX, make sure to give its vegan food a try, whether you’re a vegan or not. With rich Mexican flavors incorporated into each dish, you won’t be disappointed. Provecho!
