HOW I WON A TRIP TO AUSTRALIA ON INSTAGRAM

“you won a trip to australia through an instagram competition? no way those things are fake.”

this is the line i’ve been hearing for the last two years. at one point, i believed it too.

tell you how it happened? well, a friend sent me a link for a competition that chia co. was holding to show them how you stay healthy for a trip for two to australia. it was pretty simple really. to enter the competition i had to post pictures to instagram for a full month of what i do to stay healthy and tag chia co. considering this was something i already naturally did, this was easy for me.

during the time of the competition, i had been practicing ashtanga yoga, took a trip to yosemite national park and was spending a good amount of time outdoors paddleboarding, riding my bike, skateboarding, etc. so these were the type of images i posted and tagged. i noticed most people were posting pictures of the food they ate, recipes or how they were using chia co’s products in their daily life. honestly, i actually hadn’t even heard of the company before i entered the competition, which made me slightly nervous that i had no chance in winning.

time passed and i almost forgot about the competition when i woke up one morning to chia co. tagging me in a post on instagram announcing that i had won the trip to australia. i was skeptical like everyone else but sent over my information and patiently waited to hear back. correspondences began and a game of back and forth over a good amount of time lead to my coordination and confusions of how to make sure i did this trip just right. i couldn’t figure out a time i wanted to go because i didn’t have the funds to go and even though they pay for everything, but i wanted to extend the trip for longer than a week.

nearly two years have gone by since i actually won the competition and i finally set the dates, asked my friend melodie to join and extended the trip.

we’re departing out of miami international airport monday, april 11th at 6pm. i’ll be documenting this trip and live posting as we go through on stranded on land’s instagram feed. follow along and track our adventure through #strandedXaustralia.
