Balancing everyday life while still making time to #GETOUTSIDETHEGRIND and get into some adventures can be challenging. I’ve discovered that living fully for me means residing in a place that being outside and discovering new things comes easy. Between day to day responsibilities and kicking off our first Outdoor Innovators event, April flew by and left us without many moments to hop in the car for a getaway. Luckily, we’ve posted up in a place where many like to vacation. Taking mini-adventures during downtime has become second nature and allowed us to deep dive into the things that make this little coastal neighborhood, an easy escape any day of the week.
Cruising along the 101 just feels easy; even when it’s packed with the daily chaos. Walking through neighborhoods to discover beach entries + meeting the various personalities that call these breaks their backyard has made this place feel like home. There are blocks filled with plenty of places to eat + drink, an abundance of shenanigans to get yourself into and welcoming locals that will make you feel like lifelong friends.
If ocean breezes + an affordable getaway is on your agenda, this nook is one worth exploring. When you live in a place with so much magic, sometimes, you don’t need to go far to escape. Here is a small handful of things that have made us say, Leucadia, you’re something special.
EAT + DRINK
This quirky, laid back coffee shop is a neighborhood favorite for more than one reason. Located down the hill from Beacon’s Beach + across from Surfhouse Adventures Boutique Motel, it’s the perfect spot for an early morning pick me up, afternoon meeting or pre-sunset surf caffeine boost. The staff is young + hip and will always greet you with a smile. Connected to locally owned surf retail shop, Surfy Surfy, you can order your cup of joe and head next door and peep some surf gear, apparel + magazines. Or if you fancy, take a stroll down the 101 with your onsite roasted brew in hand.
This casual, counter service spot is not to be confused with low end. Every single item on the menu will make your taste buds soar and belly rejoice. Personal top picks would be the poke bowl with white rice, the Baja fish tacos (because what’s Southern California without a fish taco) and if you make it on the right day, the seafood curry special is a must. The fish is some of the freshest I’ve ever tasted + cooked to perfection without much doctoring, just as it should be. For the non-fish eaters, the Farmer’s Market salad or Angus beef burger will make your trip one to remember + leaves everyone with something to enjoy. Round of applause Fish 101 crew, kudos to you on perfecting the simple things. You can take all my money.
When was the last time you left that pile of laundry to do another day and packed a bag for a mini getaway? Surfhouse Boutique Motel is in our eyes a luxe stay with a low-key vibe that will make any dirtbag to high-end traveler feel welcomed. Packing an overnight bag and plopping down for an overnight at this boutique motel will make you wish you never had to leave. The decor is chic and the room is cozy with the necessary amenities to make it feel like home. We’ve raved about our stay in detail and you can check it out to peep more photos + see why this place is so great (check it out here).

Every day from 4-6PM and all day Tuesday, you’ll find this open air restaurant + patio filled with patrons chatting, sipping and snacking on a west coast merger of Mediterranean meets Latin fusion right on the 101. A casual atmosphere that matches the neighborhood but with plenty of class to impress a first date, Le Papagayo is a place to play for those who like to get out on the town but still want to keep it classy. They curate live music every night from 7:30-11PM. Go ahead and book yourself a reservation, grab a good looking lady/gent or your best mates and go please your taste buds for a midday break or an evening out at one of the top 10 local’s favorite spots.
I asked a friend what he got into that day and he responded, “I surfed out where I used to live with 20 of my friends from the old neighborhood.” There are plenty of places with way better breaks, but good vibes + a super fun, family feeling are common takeaways you’ll have in the water here. Beacon’s Beach is one of my personal favorite cliff side beaches along the coast hands down. It’s a locals beach where you’re likely to see someone you know and most of the people out riding are there for the pure enjoyment of getting in the water. This beginner friendly break is a good playground for all level surfers and the friendly faces you’ll pass on the trail will make you feel welcomed like a local too.
You can kindly call me a novice shredder (because flattery is nice) but truth be told, this fair weather beginner has spent the winter taking notes from the shore; running the water line and watching sunsets. Now that the temperatures are rising and neoprene will soon be optional, I’ll be popping into the line up with the best of them and am on the hunt for buddies to catch some party waves with all summer long. Shoot us a line if you’re game to form a girl gang of fun makers + we’ll make plans for summer shred sessions.
A concept shop after my own heart that has been self-defined as, “a shop by non-conforming-never-grow-up-weirdos.” Vintage wearing, bike loving, vinyl record playing weirdos who like to surf, skate + hang with the best of them. The guys + gals running the show have seamlessly twisted classic America + with the Native American roots at the forefront of the S&G Brand and left the hipster vibes + ‘tude back in 2010 where it belongs.
Wander on over for Thursday Night Hangs from 6-9PM and submerge yourself into a shop that’s far beyond retail. Grab some tacos from the truck out front, a beer from the back + meander around the shop while listening to a rad local band or tunes spinning off the record player with a community of amigos who are casually cool, calm + collected and will never make you feel unwelcome. The racks are packed with affordable and impulse purchase worthy goods. You’ll likely have to stop yourself from binge buying everything, but use the 20% Thursday Night Hangs discount to justify any damages you do to your bank account.
