There are a handful of places that offer you the best of everything, pulling at your heartstrings so strongly that you’ll question if you ever want to get out of the bubble. Leucadia and North County San Diego is one of those places that will give it to you bad. The charming ways of the people, boutiques, cafés and coffee shop. The mellow, but fun surf breaks and cliffside sunsets make living easy around these parts. It was no surprise when we heard there was a cute + cozy surf inspired boutique hotel popping up right down the hill from our favorite beach break.
Surfhouse Boutique Motel is a dream come true for travelers + locals alike. The Harth brothers, Nikki + Sander are the brains behind this beautiful home away from home close to the corner of the 101 + Leucadia Blvd. These boys were born + raised in Encinitas and had the luxury to grow up surfing the local breaks right in their own backyard. The decision to create Surfhouse Boutique Hotel and Surfhouse Adventures came with the vision to immerse travelers into the local surf community, customize their surf experience and make sure they get stoked + leave stoked.
Although I literally live less than a mile from Surfhouse’s front door, I was intrigued by what “Drop in as a Guest, Take off Like a Local” really meant. I mean, catchy taglines + cute decor is something you can find at any sleep spot around any town, but what we all wanted to know was what makes this spot the one we tell all our friends about. Other than setting up shop right across from our favorite caffeine refill station, Coffee Coffee + sunset spot, Beacon’s Beach, what does it have to offer?
The answer: The people behind the brand. These people and the experience they offer is what makes Surfhouse Boutique Motel well worth the investment for any traveler or local looking for a little extra luxury with a low-key, feels like home vibe. This chill atmosphere is subtly sugar coated in a pretty package of fine-tuned details, beautiful, tasteful decor + bedding from heaven + you have an overnight experience that is on point and wondering why THIS isn’t where you’re laying your head every night. Rates range from $150- $225 year around landing Surfhouse as a luxe stay that we can’t live without.
I come from a city where staycation-ing is a way of life. People work hard, play hard and travel often. When there’s no time to hop on a plane to get away, they take a day and have an overnight at a favorite hotel around town. This way of life is one I’ve grown accustomed to living because sometimes, the logistics of the daily grind don’t afford you the time to get away far. But any type of get away, even if it’s just a mile down the street, is sometimes just the remedy you need to recharge the batteries + reboot for the day to day grind.
Meeting Nikki + Annika Walden, 2/3 of the Surfhouse dream team, stirred my curiosity as to what it might be like to pack an overnight bag + stay at a local “surfhouse.” What’s it like to get away for a day in my new neighborhood, in a new city and spend a day, as a guest, living like a local. I grabbed the girls + booked a one night stay on the night of the Taste of Leucadia to make our sip + strollin super easy. Check in was a breeze + convenient through their check in and welcome email system. We received a one stop shop email with all the need to know’s easily accessible at the top of my inbox and included some suggestions from the crew on their local favorite to do’s.
We took the luxury of popping in early to drop off our bags and change to spend a day at the beach. One of the amenities offered at Surfhouse is optional access to surfboards, wax + bikes to help you get outside + stoked. We opted to keep it chill and made our way up the hill + down the path to spend the morning watching the surf, snapping some photos and soaking up some sun at Beacon’s Beach. A quick walk back to our home for the day left us with plenty of time to scrub down + freshen up for an afternoon catching up on emails, edits + game plans for the night’s shenanigans ahead.
A stay away is really only as good as you sleep. Even sandwiched in between my two favorite ladies and right across the street from the train tracks, this bed was some sort of cotton candy dreams come true + made counting sheep obsolete. The bedding was heavenly and by Goldilock’s standards “Just right.” I slept soundly through the night right up to my usual waking hour of sunrise which afforded me the opportunity to see the skies kissed with pinks and soft blues with a fresh brewed cup of coffee in hand from the neighbors at Coffee Coffee.
A casual morning spent on the upstairs terrace and soaking in a few more minutes at our home away from home was the perfect way to end this one day get away. Because all things must come to an end, we packed up and exchanged some see ya laters to this new found neighborhood favorite. The best part of a staycation coming to an end is that getting back into the groove of the daily comes easy. We spent a night with the Surfhouse crew and left with good memories, new friends and our own definition of what it means to “Drop in as a Guest, Take off Like a Local.”
Taking the time to #GETOUTSIDETHEGRIND is something that we’re push for. Adventure is part of the daily routine, not an escape from it and having a staying at Surfhouse Boutique Motel is all the right kinds of everything to make that happen. We love a good camp out, even low-key hotel, but there are those days and times that a getaway needs a little luxe without the fuss. This place gets it and made us hippy-living ladies feel right at home.
