For our second Outdoor Innovators, our friend Alyx Schwarz from Shoestring Adventures took us from zero to ready for backpacking in a half day packed with new friends, a mini hike, and wrapped the day with a delicious camp-style cobbler.
Our favorite part: This was no show and tell. We practiced calculating our trip time, packing (there are many great tricks), cooking, washing dishes (way more fun than in a kitchen), setting up a tent, hiking with a packed backpack (so heavy!) + even digging a potty hole (just digging guys, just digging).
Hitting the backcountry for an overnight is no joke, and although it’s exciting, the idea can be pretty intimidating if you have never done it. We are so happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with our friends at Shoestring Adventures to create a safe space to play and learn hands-on some core backpacking skills. Most importantly, we talked about how to do it all responsibly and how to take care of the outdoors and ourselves while at it.
With their new skills powered by Shoestring’s super helpful Adventure Planning Guidebook, everyone who participated in the workshop left in agreeance to get geared up, stop dreaming about their first backpacking trip and actually start planning for it!
Good luck everyone on your next adventure + thank you so much Alyx and Shoestring Adventures for inspiring us every day to get outside.
