with the holidays in full swing and gift giving and recieving in the air, i can’t help but think about the environmental troubles we face that are connected to consumerism, waste + non-usable materials for convenience.
what if you could change the world, one purchase at a time?
that’s not the real question. the real question is, do you believed that there is power in your purchases? will you take action to prove it?
change doesn’t happen because of the big things, it happens because of collections of hundreds and thousands of small things that add up.
you are a part of this collection of small things. you have an opportunity to force change.
conscious consumerism is an awareness that has been growing in magnitude in my life for years now. it began with decisions to reduce the consumption of meat, fast + processed foods. then trickled over to less toxic products for my body and household. the more i learned about what i was putting into and on my body, the more aware i became of the bigger effects i had the opportunity to be a part of. and this knowledge revealed that my power is bigger than just deciding the be vegetarian to be healthier or buying from farmers markets to support local economy.
it is about shifting the way people think, which shifts the way people act.
power lies in the “because” behind consumption.
we buy out of necessity, convenience and emotion. but what if these purchases, no matter the reason, shifted from mindless exchanges of the most convenient and cheapest resources. what if we only purchased products that support equal existence from the ways workers are paid and treated to the impacts they make on the world we’re living in. what if your purchases contributed to reducing the effects on the environment + supported causes that need a little extra help mending the damages we’ve already done to mother earth.
the good news is that they can. there’s a whole community of people out there who not only feel compelled for change, but have taken action to make this happen.
with the gift giving season in full swing, i put together a little gift guide with outdoor adventuring in mind. below you will find a few great brands + companies i’ve discovered this year who not only are producing quality products, but they’re also taking positive, proactive steps for change. before you make your next purchase, take a few to think about what power your dollar, words and actions have in the world of commerce. and perhaps let that thought lead the way to actions. actions that will change the way you, your community and the world you live in buys. one purchase at a time. you can be the beginning of small changes that can create big changes.
