INSPIRING OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS

4 WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED TO MAKE EVERYDAY EARTH DAY

from a stranded blog, 2017, April 21 /

A MISSION TO CONSUME CONSCIOUSLY, ADVENTURE RESPONSIBLY

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Events and actions are organized worldwide in order to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This is a day dedicated to the celebration, education, and observation of the necessity to honor and care for Mother Nature and all the elements that she’s created for us to enjoy.

It’s easy to make a fuss and take action for a few minutes or a single day in the name of a good cause. The real differences are made in the daily decisions and conversations we make to decrease our impacts made to the natural resources we have the luxury to comfortably enjoy. Consciousness begins with awareness and is expanded with actions.

Our mission through Stranded on Land is to help provide people to GET OUTSIDE THE GRIND on the regular + chase childhood dreams. Because we believe the quality of life, happiness, creativity + real connections begin offline and are inspired outside. While we’re proving that adventure is possible for everyone. Any day of the week, anywhere you are. We’re working with organizations and companies we believe in to help increase awareness and actions that will help you consume consciously + adventure responsibly

GET EDUCATED + GET INVOLVED.

In honor of the day set aside to celebrate and acknowledge our precious planet, we wanted to share a few of our favorite organizations who commit daily to making every day Earth Day. Below you will find 4 ways you can too. These organizations and companies are taking action to help preserve nature + the outdoors, educate and encourage others to get outside more. They provide opportunities for those who may not have the resources or means to do so, to connect to the enjoyment that the outdoors provides. If you’re looking for an opportunity to make a small impact, here’s a good place to start. And if you feel inspired, you can take bigger actions and get involved through volunteering, donating or simply spreading these conscious principles throughout your network and community too.

Interested in connecting with one of the organizations directly? Email us at hello@strandedonland.com and we’ll help guide you in the right direction.

ONE // LEAVE NO TRACE

Leave No Trace is built on seven core principles that are used to communicate the best available minimum impact guidance for enjoying the outdoors responsibly. Although Leave No Trace has its roots in backcountry and wilderness, the practices have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere – from the These Principles are the most robust and widely utilized minimum impact outdoor practices. The practices have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere – from the backcountry to local parks, to your backyard – and for any recreational activity.

Leave No Trace is something that you can easily apply every day, with minimal commitment, but if you’re interested in a bigger part, head over to the LNT website + find out how you can connect with your local community.

Seven Principles to Incorporate Everyday, in Every Adventure

*Plan Ahead and Prepare
*Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
*Dispose of Waste Properly
*Leave What You Find
*Minimize Campfire Impacts
*Respect Wildlife
*Be Considerate of Other Visitors

TWO // SURFRIDER FOUNDATION

The mission is simple, but huge. Surfrider Foundation is globally dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches. Locally, Surfrider San Diego has a number of volunteer lead programs that address the education and actions that follow to support this mission. The ocean makes up the largest majority of our planet and you don’t have to be a surfer to care about it’s preservation and the life living within it.

The San Diego chapter’s programs include: Beach Cleanup, Beach Preservation, Hold onto your Butts, Know your H2O, No Border Sewage, Ocean Friendly Gardens, Ocean Friendly Restaurants, Rise about Plastics and STOP Coastal Climate Change.

MAKE EVERYDAY A BEACH CLEAN DAY

There are a number way to get involved for pretty much anyone. Clean beaches mean cleaner oceans. Cleaner oceans mean a cleaner environment overall. You don’t have to limit your impact to an organized group clean (although these are great too). Utilize impromptu trash + liter cleaning on our own anytime you get outside. Because, in our opinion, if you see it, it’s you’re problem too.

THREE // CHANGING TIDES FOUNDATION

Birthed from a love for the ocean, life and travel brought them together as sea sisters. Changing Tides Foundation was born from the simple idea that the world would be a better place if we were all given the opportunity to give back. This group of water women and adventurers are taking action on a calling  to help others by teaming up with local organizations globally to raise awareness and address social, environmental, health and safety concerns in the places they visit and spread the message: TOGETHER WE ARE BETTER.

The ladies leading this organization based out of Encinitas, CA collaborate with eco-minded brands and are providing the tools to make it possible + easy to ADVENTURE CONSCIOUSLY. They’re leading fun local fundraisers, offer low environmentally impacting products in their shop + create conversations for change through their social media feeds.

#PLASTICSWEARJAR CHALLENGE FOR LESS SINGLE USE PLASTICS

Start activating your habit to leaving behind the smallest footprint possible while traveling in order to preserve the beauty of the places you visit right here at home. They’re launching an ongoing campaign this Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd to increase awareness + accountability of the amount of single use items we purchase + use everyday. Join the challenge for a day, a week or the message sinks in, make it an everyday effort.

FOUR // STOKESHARE

Every since we met co-founder, Joel Cesare a year ago, we’ve been hooked on StokeShare and the simple message and misson they’re making a trend.  Own Less, Do More. Share Stoke. Pretty simply said, right? This online market place makes it possible for you to get outside + into more adventures by creating an online library of action sports gear that you can rent from your peers. Why’s this great? Because it gets you outside + helps reduce waste + impacts made on the environment by needlessly over purchasing. It also allows you to build local connections and reduce carbon footprints connected to transportation for travel.

The best part of StokeShare is that they’re using this library of gear to “connect the next generation with nature through action sports. Co-Founder, Warren Neilson is fueled by the simple thought that, “People protect what they love, love what they know and know what they experience.” StokeShare and it’s community is making these experiences possible by taking kids outside. Primarily, kids who come from lower income or inner city neighborhoods who might not naturally have the opportunity to experience nature. through their One Watershed program. If you ask us, this is what life is all about.

OWN LESS. DO MORE. SHARE THE STOKE

Do you have a garage or patio full of dusty gear? Join the StokeShare community + list your underused action sports gear for the enjoyment of others. Don’t have extra gear but want to get outside? Instead of purchasing your own or renting from a tourist shop while traveling, consider renting from a local. This gear + these small dollars are what make One Watershed possible.
